Movie soundtracks and scores are completely underrated; most people forget about the important role music has within a film. Imagine watching a movie without the sound—it would basically make every movie appear like a horror film or just be super boring. The soundtrack ultimately is there as a guide for the emotions an audience should be experiencing.

I have comprised this list of some of my favourite film soundtracks and scores while also trying to keep a variety to cater to multiple music tastes. Also, if you have not seen the movies that go along with these, then you MUST check them out!

Drive (2011) Cliff Martinez

If you are a fan of synth-y night tunes, you NEED to listen to this. Seriously though, play this from start to finish either while you’re driving, taking a midnight stroll or even just sitting in your room bored. Be warned: once you watch the movie, the score will take on a much darker meaning.

First Song Suggestion: “A Real Hero” - College & Electric Youth
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) Various Artists

At this point I am sure everyone has heard this soundtrack—there is a reason why this album has been at the top of Billboard since its release. It encompasses an amazing collection of classic rock from the ’70s that is a great way to expand your musical repertoire or just revisit!

First Song Suggestion: “Come and Get Your Love” - Redbone

Jurassic Park (1993) John Williams

Literally every time I hear the theme song from this AMAZING movie, I tear up and get goose bumps—I might have a slight obsession with dinosaurs. John Williams’s score is so well composed, and definitely worth the listen when you need intense, motivational study music.

First Song Suggestion: “Theme From Jurassic Park” - John William

Howl’s Moving Castle (2005) Joe Hisaishi

Oh man, oh man, oh man. There is something so sophisticated about listening to the duet of piano and strings—it feels like you are walking the streets somewhere in Europe. Every movie that Studio Ghibli produces has amazing scores. Definitely give them all a listen if you like this one!

First Song Suggestion: “A Walk in the Skies” - Joe Hisaishi

Pulp Fiction (1994) Various Artists

Ahhhh Quentin Tarantino—my favourite director of all time. He knows how to make cult-classic films that also have superb soundtracks. Out of all of them, Pulp Fiction stands out for all of its unique tunes. Like Guardians of the Galaxy, this soundtrack is comprised of classics that will make any night groovy.

First Song Suggestion: “Bustin’ Surfboards” - The Tornadoes

Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001, 2002, & 2003) Howard Shore

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is a beautifully composed soundtrack by Howard Shore—he won two Oscars for the scores of the first and last films. The music is INTENSE, and it can make any mundane task entertaining and worthwhile.

First Song Suggestion: “The Treason of Isengard” - Howard Shore

These six soundtracks are some standouts in my opinion. However, if you want some more, here is a list of some honourable mentions:

-       The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) Ennio Morricone

-       The Great Gatsby (2013) Various Artists

-       Amélie (2001) Yann Tiersen

-       The Graduate (1967) Simon & Garfunkel

-       Django Unchained (2012) Ennio Morricone

Happy listening friends!
